3 Tips on How to Prepare for Your First 5K

Running a 5K doesn’t have to be as painful as you have made it in your head, especially with these 3 great tips.  And if you’re still are fearful of the run, enjoy yourself and register for the walk!

You’ve been thinking about it for months, or maybe even years, but you’ve finally decided to sign-up for your first ever 5K. Now you’re wondering to yourself, how do I prepare for this? How early do I have to get there? What do I wear? What if I have to use the washroom during my run? What will people at the race think of me? These are all valid questions that one would have, and it’s better to have all of the questions than to have no questions and show up having prepared 0 percent. And! You’re reading this blog, meaning you’re ready to act before it’s too late. Without any further ado, here are three tips on how to prepare for your first ever 5K.

  1. Train! The best Olympians have to train for years to run and set the record of their dreams. Luckily, we don’t have to worry about the Olympics just yet. As this is your first 5K, your goal should be simply to finish. 5 kilometers translates to 3.1 miles, so 3.5 miles should be your training goal. Everybody is different, so it’s best to take things at your own pace. Increment by 0.5 miles when you reach your timed goal or feel comfortable doing so.
  2. Get there early. Nothing is worse than hearing the gun go off while you’re looking for parking or while you’re in the porta-potty. Arriving one hour before the race starts ensures the time to find parking and expel any business the last-minute nerves may bring.
  3. Be comfortable. Running shorts, a comfortable shirt, socks, and running shoes are all you need. Headbands, wristbands, armbands, Fitbits, and watches are nice to have, but only if you want. Don’t worry about what everyone else is thinking, and only focus on finishing!

With these 5K tips, you should be able to finally check-off “Run 5K” from your bucket list.
