Citizen Academy

Project Highlight: The Citizen Academy

The Citizen Academy aims towards educating and training normal, everyday citizens into law-savvy individuals.

Citizen Academy is a 12-week course offered by the Thousand Oaks Police Department where they can learn about law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Its mission is to familiarize people with the law enforcement and its role in –passed the simple point of “to serve and protect.”

Those who wish to participate in this great program learn how officers are trained, visit the Sheriff’s Detention facilities, talk to real-life investigators, and see specialized teams like the Hostage Negotiators, Bomb Technicians, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), and k9 handlers in action.

We do not wish to make police officers out of the participants. Merely to present law enforcement in a manner that rids public misunderstandings and promote valuable and lasting relationships. And in the age of “alternative facts” and false assumptions, a close relationship with the local police department may be what your community needs so that both sides understand each other. The main “message” for participants is that police officers and deputy sheriffs are dedicated and professional public servants whose concern for you, your family, and everyone in your community are at the heart of everything they do.

Knowledge is not a harmful tool and the wide-spread of it not only opens your mind to new perspectives and ways of thinking, it can also make you a more understanding person.

If you understand that there is still you don’t know about the world and are interested in learning about complex and difficult processes in order to become a better and more informed citizen of the nation, then we suggest you take this great, relatively short course!
